Chelsea 4-0 Watford

Chelsea 4-0 Watfoird (FA CUP REPLAY 13/01/04)

Marc Lawrenson (BBC Pundit) said before this replay that they would do us at there place and they would be off to the seaside for round 4. Oh how I would've loved us to prove him wrong or snatch a miracle and achieve one of the biggest cup upsets in history, but thats not what it's about- is it?

You see we support a club who are riddled in debt, who have a small squad and are a small town in Hertfordshire and do not have in reserve the billions that Chelsea have. What we have as our greatest weapon is our pride, and that sounds pathetic, but pride is a powerful thing. You see pride got us that emphatic draw at The Vic just two weeks ago and thats what got us promotion in 99' and the league title in 98'. As fans we should expect to see our players going out on the pitch and doing us proud and that's what they did two weeks ago and it was certainly not the first time- Ray Lewington. I can remember several games under Ray, in which the players have bombarded the oppenents half, playing great football and the result maybe not paying off or we would create a victory that was so sound it was remeniscent of the GT days. Well last night as far as I'm concerned was a celebration of that. I felt as a supporter win or lose it was time we thanked Ray for digging us out of a hole which many thought would turn into an abyss. Don't call me naive, but I don't think we will go down.

Last night there were 6,500 hornets in the stands, the biggest away turnout for a good few years and we made our present known. Not in an intimidating way, but in the Watford way. It was a night for the fans and the players to revel in an opportunity that a club like us will not experience that often. The Watford way is respect, enjoyment and most of all a message to convey to outsiders and other club supporters, we know we're great fans- lets show it. It wasn't the first time I have seen the home crowd look at the Watford travelling support and look in baffled amusement about why we're so happy. You see those Chelsea fans probably haven't been through thick and thin and they don't understand that we have learnt to take nothing for granted. We have a got our chance at the Bridge- lets make the most of it- lets leave our imprint.

There was not one match under Vialli in which i felt the team had done the fans proud. There was the Charlton Athletic match, but that was undermined by the Italian's decision to field a weakened team against Sheffield Wednesday in the following round. Under Lewington we have tasted everything apart from being in real danger, we are flirting with relegation but have yet to stay in the zone and have yet to prove that we are a relegation team.

The games itself passed me by and was part of the background as my eyes strayed around the stadium as I really realised what my club had achieved. Jack Smith was composed as ever, another solid performance keeping pacey Gronkjaer quiet and Gavin Mahon was keeping up his current good form. The goals were great- bar the first. The first goal was the killer, so early and after such a good start. The first couple of minutes brought 5 Watford corners, but as the old cliche goes, you have to convert your chances. A Neal Ardley error gifted Chelsea the lead and despite his best efforts his form is certainly poor of late. The next three goals were just class, great football and we could only stand back and applaud a side who were not going to take any prisoners and not underestimate the oppostion this time round. After Hasselbaink added the 2nd goal, our fans were rather quiet knowing that was the killer blow. It took several minutes for that realisation to hit the supporters and then we were in party mood. Out came the inflatable ball, the banners, and the chants we weren't going to let a defeat fade us and off we were to rock the Bridge. The noise and mood reminded me of those amazing Premiership days. These matches will be remembered in the memory of every Watford fan present- and we have to thank the staff and the players for giving us that opportunity.

Last night it was about enjoying ourselves at the Vic. A large St.George's cross in the Harding with Watford- Loyal written across it, personified the mood. If the flags flying, the yellow army singing and the women, children and adults singing weren't enough then you are supporting the wrong club. We made our mark on Stamford Bridge they won't forget us...
